What is a Charged Off Credit Card Debt?
|
| |
When people hear that their credit card debt will be charged off they sometimes think that it means that their debt will be forgotten, others think that it means that they will no longer be able to charge anything on their credit card anymore, these are so far off from what a charged off credit card really means. If your credit card company has advised you that your credit card debt is being charged off then it is a fact that you have been defaulting in making your monthly credit card payments for some time now.
Credit card companies do not want to charge off your credit card because what it really means is that they have given up on receiving a payment from you and have written your account in their books as a bad debt. This bad debt can have a drastic affect on your credit report as the charge off will be reported to the major credit reporting agencies. The credit card company will try to contact you and talk to you before your credit card debt is charged off and will try to make some payment arrangements with you. If you can not make the payments and your debt ends up getting charged off don't think for a moment that the credit card company will stop contacting you and just leave it at that. They will continue to hound you and try to make arrangements with you to pay them back the debt that you owe. If possible, paying your debt back would be best but if you really can't pay it back there is nothing that you or anyone else can do about it. When the credit card company representative tries to make a payment plan with you don't agree to the plan unless you really know that you can commit to it. No matter how much they try to pressure you and threaten you to accept their plan, don't take it if you can't handle it. If you accept a payment plan that you are not sure you can pay, you might end up with more problems later by bouncing checks and creating more financial problems in your life.
If you can avoid your credit card getting charged off then make every effort you can to make your payments before the charge off happens. Credit card companies will usually give around six months before they charge off credit card debts. If you are in a situation where your credit card has already been charged off and want to improve the mark on your credit report, try to negotiate a one lump sum payment with the creditor. Giving a lump sum payment should be 50% or less of what your total balance was. Also, be sure that they report to the credit reporting agencies that your account was paid in full and has been resolved. The negative mark will still be on your credit report but the paid in full remark will look better than if never paid.
