Contacting all the lenders and keeping track of all the terms of the different settlements can be very time consuming and labor intensive. With a debt settlement agency, their counselors will contact your lenders and negotiate on your behalf. Then you will send one monthly payment to the debt counseling services and they will disburse the payments to the lenders according to the terms of the settlement. Many creditors are more willing to cooperate with debt counseling agencies than an individual debtor. Lenders know that debt counselors will not take on a case unless the borrower has severe debt problems. Their reasoning is it is better to collect part of the debt rather than write off all of the debt with a bankruptcy discharge.
