Fake Debt Collectors: How to Know If They are Not Real

Major Advantages of Debt Settlement Like Paying Less Than 50%
When a debt is sold to a collection agency, the household that is in debt will begin to receive phone calls from complete strangers who will be asking for money. In a situation like this, it can be hard to know if the agency is legitimately attempting to collect money, or if it is simply a complete scam.
You must be very cautious when dealing with people over the phone. Remember that even if they have all of your personal information, it does not make them legitimate. The first step in deciding whether they are really a collections agency is to ask very detailed information about the debt they are collecting. Ask for everything from dates to interest rates. They should have this information.
If you have any doubts that the debt is yours, check your credit report. The debt should appear on your credit report if it has been legitimately passed to a collections agency.
Request that information be sent, via mail, directly to your current address. If they can not do this, then you know they are not a real collections agency. Also get their information including a physical address and phone number.
You should protect yourself as well. No matter what information they have, never give out your credit card or bank numbers over the phone until you are absolutely certain they are a real collections agency and the debt is yours.
Be very careful about calls from strangers requesting money. If you can not verify the debt, ignore the calls.
