How to Reduce Credit Card Debt like a Professional

How To Reduce Your Debt Without ConsolidatingMany today are overwhelmed with debt. As we emerge from a period of incredible affluence, some have never lived through a time of such challenge. So, let’s look at some basic methods for reducing that debt and increasing financial well-being.
The first step is to stop adding debt. Charging more debt to pay off what’s already owed is like the gambler doubling down in hopes of hitting it big. Get honest. Where are your dollars going? Denial won’t work. If you have a leakage problem it must be found. You may want to carry a clipboard with you for a few weeks and write down where every penny goes. You’ll soon see exactly what your financial situation is and where the corrections must take place.
The biggest debt problem of today is the credit card. When we pay $20 cash, we think about it. When we charge $20 it becomes vague and we soon forget the necessity of eventually handing over that $20 bill plus additional interest. If you like the “benefits” of a card, get a debit card. With the debit card, the amount is deducted from your checking account immediately. No later surprises. Use your check book register and write your debits down like you would a check. This running account helps establish where you are each day.
Pay more than the minimal amount each month and aim to pay off the cards with highest interest first. Sometimes you can transfer these charges to other cards charging less. Be sure to read the agreements carefully and if you don’t understand something call customer service and ask. Be an informed consumer.
Spending too much creates debt. Ask, “Do I REALLY need this?” Go home and think about it before you impulsively buy. Make a list of what you truly need at the grocery store and stick to it. Adapt your menus to what’s seasonal and cheapest. Eating out should be minimal. Pack a lunch. You will be shocked at how quickly these savings add up.
Stay out of the stores as much as possible. Check out local garage sales and farmer’s markets. You will be surprised at the high quality of goods available at a fraction of the cost. Look around your household, what could you sell at a garage sale or on e-bay? And, don’t forget your talents; can you market them to others for extra income? Be creative.
Would you like to pay less than 50% of your debt? Now you can with debt settlement.
