How to Write a Debt Dispute Letter that Works
  Major Advantages of Debt Settlement

The key to cleaning up a credit report and eliminating negative reports is to write a successful debt dispute letter. Writing a succesful letter can be fairly simple, yet will enhance the purchasing power that comes with better credit scores.

The first step to writing a great debt dispute letter is to avoid any letter templates found on the internet. Credit agencies receive thousands of letters per week and these internet templates are overused. Writing an original letter lets the agency know that they are dealing with an informed and intelligent consumer. When writing the letter, be simple and to the point. Because the agencies receive so many letters, it is important to make your letter as short as possible.

Secondly, makes sure to specify that they need to provide proper documentation that proves that a debt is owed to them. Law dictates that the debt will need to be proven within 30 days, or the item must be removed from the credit report.

Thirdly, site specific laws, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and make it clear that you are willing to pursue legal action if the items are not removed.

Additionally, make sure to list specific items that are being disputed. Items that can be disputed include the debt amount and the name of the creditor.

It is important to leave certain things out of the letter, as well. Never admit to owing any debt. This gives the creditor more of an advantage than they already have. The letter should shoulder the burden of proving the debt owed on them, and should not acknowledge any guilt on the writer's behalf.

Finally, the letter should include the order to contact the writer only through mail and not through telephone calls. This will serve as a cease and desist letter and should cut back on the annoying collection calls.

After the letter is written, it should be sent through certified mail. Make sure to spend the extra money to receive a receipt from the recipient. This is important, because timing is essential in a successful debt dispute letter.
