What Debt Collectors Cannot Do

If you have debt collectors calling you day in and day out, it is important to realize that you do have rights. Just because you have fallen behind with your bills, it doesn't mean that debt collectors can invade your personal life. The more you know about your rights, the better off you will be when it comes to dealing with debt collectors. The following are some of the things debt collectors can not do.

You should know that debt collectors can not ask you to pay you more than you owe. Additionally, collectors can not ask you to pay additional fees that are not a part of your original credit or loan agreement. For example, if you were locked into a specific contract with a credit card company, you can not have additional fees added on, even if you are months behind on your monthly credit card payments.

Debt collectors are allowed to call you. However, they are not allowed to be aggressive when it comes to your inquiries. Thus, if collectors use obscene language like swearing all calling you names, they are then violating your rights. Similarly, the debt collectors can not threaten to physically harm you or your loved ones, even in jest.

Your life should not be inconvenienced by debt collectors. Thus, they should not call before 8 am your time or after 9pm. This is considered harassment because you could be asleep during this time. Additionally, if the collector calls you when he or she knows you are at work or in the middle of engagement, this could be considered harassment.
